Years after my mothers death, my niece shared the following regarding my mother (her grandmother). I had never heard it before. Each mothers day I reread it and am grateful for such a kind and loving mother. I never knew anything different but I appreciate her even more as I read it. It's warm, you might like it.
"Today while I am thinking about people who show Christlike service for #lighttheworld I have to share this story!
Recently, my husband Chapman and I invited the sister missionaries into our home just to get to know them a little better while they are here serving in LA. While we were introducing ourselves, I found out one of the sisters was from Cedar City, Utah where my grandparents lived when they were still alive. I asked her if she had known them, not really expecting anything since they passed away a while ago. To my surprise she said "Helen Webster!? She was one of the most important people in my life!"
She went on to tell me that when she was a little girl (like 6 years old), her little brother was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told them he wouldn't live, but her parents were doing everything they could to save his life. They found out they could try a brand new treatment for him at a hospital in another state and decided to go for it. She explained while they were in treatments, her mom lived in another state with her brother and her Dad worked around the clock to make ends meet. She felt really alone and was struggling a lot with such heavy burdens at a young age. But, she told me, grandma found out about her family's lot with such heavy burdens and took her in. Grandma picked her up from elementary school everyday, brought her to their house, and made her a snack. She helped her with her homework (since she used to be a teacher herself) and baked cookies with her. She wrote her letters of encouragement, read her stories, and gave her gifts.
She said it completely changed her life and made such a difference in that really hard time. She considered my grandma to be her own grandma, and carried notes from her and pictures of her with her even today. While I had never heard of this story before, I couldn't help but cry because I know this was totally something she would do. We talked about all the things grandma would do to make her feel special--the same things she did to make me feel special--and I couldn't help but think of how lucky I am to have had such an amazing example in my life.!!"
